How App Store Keywords Actually Work (iOS vs. Android)

Understanding how keywords are indexed in each store is foundational to effective ASO. The mechanics are significantly different between iOS and Android, and conflating them leads to suboptimal strategies on both platforms.
iOS Keyword Indexing
Apple indexes keywords from a specific set of metadata fields:
1. App Title — 30 characters, highest weight 2. Subtitle — 30 characters, secondary weight 3. Keyword Field — 100 characters, not publicly visible 4. Developer Name — indexed, lower weight 5. In-App Purchase Names — indexed
A critical rule: do not repeat words across fields. If a keyword appears in your title, including it in the keyword field wastes those characters without adding any indexing benefit. Apple's algorithm doesn't reward repetition — it penalizes wasted space.
The Keyword Field Strategy
The 100-character iOS keyword field is comma-separated and indexes individual words, not phrases. This means "fitness,tracker" gets you indexed for both "fitness" and "tracker" separately, as well as "fitness tracker" as a phrase. Don't use spaces unless you specifically want word combinations that include those exact adjacencies.
Google Play Indexing
Google Play crawls all text in your listing: - Title - Short Description - Long Description (full 4000 characters) - Developer Name
Unlike iOS, Google Play uses semantic indexing — it understands synonyms and related terms. This means you don't need to keyword-stuff every exact phrase. Natural language that accurately describes your app's functionality will generate broader indexing coverage than a list of keywords strung together.
Keyword Research Process
Effective keyword research for app stores requires understanding:
*Search Volume* — How often is this term searched in the store? Higher volume means more potential impressions.
*Competition* — How many competing apps rank for this term, and how strong are the top-ranking apps? High competition terms are difficult to rank for without significant authority.
*Relevance* — Does this keyword accurately reflect what your app does? Irrelevant rankings generate impressions that don't convert.
*Intent* — What is the user trying to accomplish when they search this term? High-intent terms convert better than broad exploratory terms.
Mid-Tail vs. Long-Tail Strategy
New or low-authority apps rarely succeed by targeting high-volume broad terms ("fitness", "productivity", "finance"). The competition is simply too strong. A more effective approach targets mid-tail terms with specific intent and moderate competition — terms where your app can realistically rank in the top 10.
